Monthly performance
In March, the biotechnology sector came under pressure, shaped by rising geopolitical tensions and increasing macroeconomic uncertainty. Higher oil prices and persistent inflation concerns weighed on risk appetite, while expectations for monetary easing were scaled back, putting additional pressure on growth-sensitive sectors. The biotech sector experienced elevated volatility, with intermittent recovery phases partially offsetting losses. Strategically, M&A activity remained robust, particularly for differentiated late-stage programs, while a notable clinical setback highlighted the inherent risks of advanced development. At the same time, financing conditions became somewhat more restrictive. Overall, the month reinforced the importance of strong fundamentals, selective risk management and clear regulatory visibility in the current market environment.
Monthly performance
In February, the biotechnology sector continued its positive momentum, supported by active M&A activity and a revival in capital markets. While sector rotation towards defensive areas intensified and renewed trade policy uncertainty led to increased volatility at times, the healthcare sector overall remained resilient. Pharmaceuticals were exempt from newly introduced US tariffs, reducing immediate political uncertainty for the sector. At the same time, the most active IPO week in several years signaled improving financing conditions. On the regulatory front, a new FDA approval pathway for gene and RNA-based therapies provided supportive momentum, while several high-profile rejections by the FDA underscored the independence of regulatory standards. Overall, the month reinforced the importance of strong fundamentals, solid balance sheets and clear regulatory pathways in the current market environment.
Monthly performance
In January, the biotechnology sector started the year on a constructive note, supported by a positive backdrop around the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference. Investor focus centred on companies with advanced pipelines, clear regulatory visibility and credible commercial prospects, which was reflected in improved financing activity. Strategic buyers once again emphasised the importance of external innovation for their R&D pipelines, while the IPO market remained selective. As the month progressed, macroeconomic and monetary policy uncertainty came further into focus, leading to increased volatility. Overall, January reinforced a renewed emphasis on fundamentals and a selective, data-driven risk management approach within the biotechnology sector.
